Ancient Relics

Many scientists believe that the dark matter comprising much of the mass of the Milky Way exists as brown dwarfs or planetary bodies on the outer fringes of our galaxy. These massive compact halo objects, or MACHOs as they are known, must be very old.

Pictured here beyond a planet-size MACHO and its icy moon is a globular star cluster, another of our Milky Way's ancient relics.
